Stay safe in the sun this summer
We all dread that sunburnt feeling—but not everyone knows how to prevent it or understands the long-term damage it can cause.
In the Channel Islands, we’re lucky to live in one of the sunniest places in the British Isles. However, it’s so important we all enjoy the sun safely whilst outside, whether you are at the beach, gardening or shopping in town.
With the UV index on the rise, now is the perfect time to brush up on sun safety tips and prepare for a healthy, sun-safe summer—with help from your local Coop Pharmacy.
Why sun protection matters
Here in the Channel Islands, we’re lucky to enjoy some of the sunniest weather in the British Isles. Whether you're at the beach, gardening or shopping in town, it's essential to enjoy the sunshine safely.
What are UV rays and the UV index?
Ultraviolet (UV) rays are invisible rays of energy from the sun that can burn and damage your skin. The UV Index measures the strength of these rays—higher numbers mean a higher risk of harm.
What factor sun cream (SPF) should I use?
-
Choose a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30 to guard against UVB rays
-
Look for at least 4-star UVA protection
-
Alternatively, check for the letters "UVA" in a circle, which indicates it meets the EU standard for UVA protection
Be sure your sun cream is still in date—most products have a shelf life of 2 to 3 years. And remember: no sunscreen offers 100% protection, so it’s important to also spend time in the shade and wear protective clothing like a hat and sunglasses.
You can find a wide range of SPF and UVA-protective sun creams at your local Coop Pharmacy.

Top tips for staying safe in the sun
Apply enough sun cream
Many people don't use enough sunscreen, reducing its effectiveness. According to the NHS, adults should apply:
-
2 teaspoons if covering head, arms, and neck
-
2 tablespoons if covering the whole body while in swimwear
Apply sun cream early
Apply sun cream 30 minutes before going outside and reapply every two hours—especially if you're sweating or swimming.
Reapply after swimming
Even water-resistant sun cream should be reapplied after swimming, towel drying or sweating to ensure continuous protection.
Stay hydrated
Drink plenty of fluids, especially water, to stay cool and prevent dehydration.
Wear sunglasses
Choose sunglasses that block 100% of UVA and UVB rays.
Spend time in the shade
In the Channel Islands, the sun’s rays are strongest between 11am and 3pm from mid-March to mid-October. This is the best time to seek shade and avoid sunburn.
Cover up
In addition to sunscreen, wear a wide-brimmed hat or cap to protect your scalp and face, and sunglasses to shield your eyes from UV rays.
