We have teamed up with the College of Further Education (CFE) in Guernsey to provide a new retail qualification and training course for those people in Guernsey who would either like to further their retail careers or work within the retail sector for the first time.
Donna Abel, Chief Human Resources Officer for the Society, said “The problem facing many retailers in Guernsey is finding enough staff with the right level of skill, ability and experience to contribute significantly to their retail operation. It is hoped that by working in partnership with the College of Further Education, the Society can help to develop retail skills for Guernsey employers, creating a pipeline of future talent for local retailers to choose from.
She continued “Given that the retail sector features third in terms of employment numbers in Guernsey, it is perhaps surprising that there is so little opportunity for people to learn the various aspects of the retail trade. The Society, as part of its continued commitment to the local community, decided to take the initiative and provide a practical solution.”
The two courses available through CFE are City & Guilds Retail Skills Qualifications, both involving two days a week in the classroom and three days ‘on the job’ training with an employer.
It includes an opportunity to ‘earn whilst you learn’ as a wage is paid by the employer to the student for the hours worked in store.
The employer would also need to agree to take the student on for the duration of the course.
Level 2 Certificate in Retail Skills (one year course)
These qualifications allow students to learn, develop and practise the skills required for employment and/or career progression in the retail industry.
This qualification can help you to progress in a wide range of retails roles, including: Sales Assistant or Supervisor.
Level 2 is aimed at getting people into a retail job that is full time and secure and learning aspects such as sales, customer support and stock control.
Level 3 Diploma in Retail Skills (2 year course)
The Level 3 Diploma in Retail Skills (Management) allows people to learn, develop and practice the skills required for employment or career progression in retail management.
It is more likely to appeal to candidates who have worked in retail for a period of time and includes modules on managing teams, resolving conflict and staff scheduling.
