Macmillan Jersey and The Channel Islands Co-operative Society are encouraging Islanders to ‘Get Together for Good’

13 September 2021

Local charity, Macmillan Cancer Support Jersey is teaming up with local organisations, including The Channel Islands Co-operative Society to encourage Islanders to ‘Get Together for Good’. The week-long campaign run by Macmillan Jersey encourages Islanders to create new ways to bring people together to fundraise for the charity. This year, the Channel Islands Co-operative Society is supporting the campaign and helping to inspire Islanders with a range of activities to bring people together and raise vital funds for Macmillan Jersey.

The Society’s Grand Marché stores in St Helier and St Peter will promote the cause and hope to inspire Islanders to host their own or attend a local Get Together for Good event. Shelf edge signage placed around the stores will provide ideas for Islanders for their Get Together: everything from a ‘bake-off’ style event and cake sale, to hosting a BBQ with family, friends or colleagues.

Last year the event raised over £26,000 which was instrumental in ensuring local cancer support services could continue into 2021 – but this year, with more opportunities to bring people together, the Macmillan team are hoping Islanders will come together to host further events and gatherings to support them.

Kevin Alway, Macmillan Jersey’s Communications Manager said ‘As with many local charities, we are recovering from what was another financially challenging year. With our Get Together for Good week – we are asking Jersey’s amazing community to come together and support us by hosting or attending a Get Together for Good event with friends, family and work colleagues. As restrictions lift, and there are more opportunities to meet face to face, we would love to have as many corporates, businesses, schools and individuals joining us for this amazing week of fun.’

Carl Winn, Head of Community and Sustainability at the Channel Islands Co-operative Society said: ‘As a community retailer, we couldn’t be more excited to support Macmillan Jersey’s Get Together for Good week. We’ve all been through a difficult 18 months and have all experienced for ourselves how much of a difference our community can make when we unite together. What better way to fundraise for an incredible local charity than to get together, host a fun event and celebrate our island community. We encourage as many Islanders as possible to be part of this brilliant cause and get together for good.’

As a local charity, Macmillan Jersey’s vision is that everybody affected by cancer in Jersey will have access to emotional, practical and wellbeing support, through their preferred route of contact. This support will be delivered in a way that meets peoples individual needs from diagnosis and beyond, and from whichever source is best placed. As the charity doesn’t receive any funding from Macmillan UK, they rely heavily on the continued support of the generous local public through events such as their Get Together for Good week.
