David Dorrity
My connection to the Co-operative movement is both professional and deeply personal. I was born and raised in Guernsey and, like many Islanders, the Channel Islands Co-operative Society has been a constant presence throughout my life. As a boy I stacked shelves after school in the Co-op at the Longstore, gaining my first experience of work and learning the value of service, teamwork and community. Today I remain a long-standing customer and member, and a great admirer of the co-operative model and the principles that underpin it. The opportunity to serve as a director would allow me to give something back to an organisation that has been part of my life for decades.
For the past twenty-five years I have built a career in the pensions industry. This experience has given me a strong grounding in governance, regulation, financial oversight and long-term strategic thinking. The pensions sector requires careful stewardship of other people’s money, robust risk management and a focus on sustainability over the long term - qualities that are equally important for a member-owned organisation such as the Channel Islands Co-operative Society. I believe this background will help me to contribute constructively to board discussions, challenge where necessary, and support decisions that balance commercial success with the long-term interests of members.
Alongside my professional career, where I was most recently a director of a successful financial services firm, I now have the privilege of serving the community as a Deputy in the States of Guernsey. This role has strengthened my understanding of public policy, economic development and the issues that matter most to Islanders. It has also given me experience of scrutiny, accountability and collective decision-making -skills directly relevant to the responsibilities of this role. My position within the States also means I am well placed to understand the evolving regulatory and political environment in which the Society operates.
If appointed, I would seek to use my experience to champion the Co-op’s unique role within the Channel Islands. The Society is not just a retailer; it is a community institution built on the principles of member ownership, ethical trading and reinvestment in the local economy. At a time when many communities feel increasingly disconnected from large corporate structures, the Co-operative model offers a powerful alternative - one that prioritises people, participation and shared benefit. I believe strongly in these values and would be proud to advocate for them both within the boardroom and across the wider community.
Another important contribution I could make is helping to ensure the Society’s voice is clearly understood within the States of Guernsey. The Co-op plays a significant role in the island’s economy, employment market and community life. My experience in government and my relationships across the Assembly mean I am well placed to help ensure that the perspectives of the Co-operative movement are understood when policies affecting local business, retail and the community are considered.
Above all, I would bring commitment, independence and a genuine passion for the Society’s success. Having grown up with the Co-op as part of my life—from stacking shelves as a young boy to being a loyal member today—I understand both its heritage and its importance to our islands. I would be honoured to help guide its future, ensuring it remains a strong, values-driven organisation delivering real benefit for its members and the wider community.
