My first ever job was in retail where I worked a Saturday and Summer job with a family company, selling chicken products. In that role I learned about the importance of community and how customers are vital to a retail business. I loved interacting with the general public and the satisfaction of a well presented store (I looked after the cooked food section).

I was reminded of this role so much during lockdown in recent years. Our local Coop became so important to us as a family, as I imagine it did for so many of my friends and neighbours.

Living on an Island we are so dependent on businesses like the Coop for food and supplies so for me the Coop is so much more than a business, It is a vital part of our community.

25 years on from my first job I have had a really enjoyable career in tax, finance, HR, Change management, Project management and non executive directorships. I still recognise the need for good customer service and having a work environment to feel proud off.

I would love the opportunity to bring my business skills and experience to the already strong Coop board to help sustain and build this essential business.

People are key in business and in the Coop staff and customers are the most important. As a board member I would advocate a people first approach to governance, whilst ensuring the Coop meets its obligations.

I would support the executive team in developing a people strategy that encourages engagement with staff and policies that support the needs of the teams and the business.

Given our dependence as an Island on the Coop another area I would focus on is risk - what are the risks to the business from supply chain to resource management. I could support identifying and mitigating risks to make the business more sustainable.

Speaking of sustainable, finances are key to the longevity of the business. I would use my finance experience to ensure the financials are understood and members have clarity on where their money is being invested and transparency on distributions.

The Coop has been a successful business for may years now. Whilst I don't believe one individual can be responsible for making a significant difference I do commit to investing my time and efforts to be the best director and member I can be.
