Michael Morris
I am standing for election as a member elected director of the Channel Islands Co operative Society because I have a deep commitment to the values of responsible, community-focused organisations and a desire to contribute to the long-term success of our islands. The Society is much more than a retailer; it is a member-owned organisation with a proud tradition of supporting local communities, investing in people, and operating sustainably. These principles resonate strongly with me, both professionally and personally, and I would welcome the opportunity to help guide the Society as it continues to grow and adapt in a rapidly changing environment.
I was born and raised in Guernsey, and my strong local roots give me a deep understanding of the unique challenges and opportunities faced by businesses and community organisations in the islands. Having lived and worked here throughout my career, I appreciate the importance of balancing financial performance with community benefit and ensuring that organisations remain responsive to the needs of local people. This local perspective, combined with extensive professional experience, enables me to connect strategic oversight with practical awareness of the issues that matter to members and the wider community.
Over the course of my career, I have held senior leadership roles in professional services and international businesses, combining client advisory work with governance, strategic planning, and operational management. In these roles, I have led teams, managed complex financial and commercial decisions, and advised on strategic transactions. This experience has developed my understanding of financial oversight, risk management, and long-term planning, all of which are essential skills for a member of the Society’s Board.
In my current role, I am responsible for establishing and leading a legal practice in Guernsey, working closely with international clients and investors. This includes providing strategic oversight, developing client relationships, and coordinating teams to deliver complex, multi-stakeholder projects. These responsibilities have strengthened my experience in financial decision-making, organisational planning, and strategic growth, as well as in assessing and mitigating risk across diverse operations. The experience of building and leading a practice locally has also deepened my appreciation of how careful governance, robust planning, and strong relationships contribute to sustainable success.
Earlier in my career, I led the development of a UK-focused real estate practice, building a team from inception and managing a group of lawyers and support staff. Alongside managing operations and people, I also served on compliance and risk committees, overseeing governance processes and regulatory frameworks. These roles required attention to detail, independent oversight, and the ability to make considered decisions in complex circumstances. I also led training and professional development initiatives, supporting the growth of future leaders within the organisation and promoting an inclusive, collaborative working environment.
Alongside my professional work, I have a strong record of community involvement. I am an active member of Rotary Guernesiais and have had the privilege of serving as President of the club. Rotary’s focus on service, fellowship, and community engagement mirrors the values of the co operative movement. During my presidency, which coincided with the Covid lockdown, I led initiatives to maintain social connection and support among members at a challenging time. I introduced a club-wide WhatsApp group and organised twice-weekly video calls so that members could remain connected despite isolation. We also coordinated volunteers to assist vulnerable members with practical tasks such as shopping and other daily needs. These initiatives reinforced the importance of community networks and highlighted the difference that thoughtful leadership and organisation can make to people’s lives.
I believe experiences such as these highlight the value of organisations that place people and community at the heart of their operations. The Channel Islands Co operative Society has long played a vital role in island life, not only through the services it provides but through its commitment to members and the wider community. If elected, I would bring my experience in strategic decision-making, governance oversight, financial management, risk assessment, people leadership, and community engagement to the Board. I am committed to supporting the Society’s long-term resilience, ensuring it continues to deliver value to members while maintaining its core principles of responsibility, sustainability, and community support.
It would be a privilege to serve as a member elected director and to contribute to the stewardship of an organisation with such an important place in the islands. I would bring energy, practical experience, and a strong commitment to member-focused decision making, helping to ensure that the Society remains successful, trusted, and responsive to the needs of the community for years to come.
