Refill station FAQs

Refill station FAQs

We know our members and customers will have lots of questions about the refill station. Hopefully we have answered all of them below, but if you have any more questions please email

Why have you introduced the refill station to Grand Marché St Helier?

As a responsible retailer, we are committed to lessening our impact on the environment and reducing the amount of plastic in our stores. By introducing a refill station, we are allowing you the opportunity to buy what you need in your own reusable container.

Grand Marché St Helier is the only supermarket in Jersey which has a refill produce station. The station is one of a number of measures your Society has taken to reduce plastic packaging in stores.

Will any other stores be getting a refill station?

We will monitor how well the station goes in Grand Marché St Helier and look at the possibility of adding a station to more Jersey stores and into our flagship Guernsey store at a later date. We will keep our members up to date and informed of any decisions made.

How does the refill station work?

  • Bring your reusable container into store.
  • Weigh your empty container on the scales at the station.
  • A label will be printed. Place this on the container.
  • Fill your container with the product of your choice.
  • Place container on the scales, select the product then scan the container label.
  • A new label will be printed. Place this over the existing label.
  • You’re done! Take your container to the checkout when you have finished your shopping and pay.

How long do the goods last (best before date)?

The goods are all dried so will have a long shelf life. The rotation of stock will be managed by the store manager.

How many items from the refill station are you allowed to purchase at once, is there a limit on the amount of one product I am allowed to buy?

There is no limit to the amount of produce you wish to buy. You must only put one product per container and make sure your empty container is weighed before you begin filling it with the produce of your choice.

How often will the product choice change?

The product arrives in 25kg bags so we will work on a rotation basis of products selling through.

Do you provide containers for the refill station or do we have to bring our own?

We will not be offering any paper bags, or containers. We do have various reusable containers for sale in our store.

How often will you clean the refill stations?

The catch trays in the station will be cleaned daily, or more regularly throughout the day if needs be. The whole station will be wiped down and cleaned at the end of each day.

Will the refill stations offer gluten free products?

The machine will not stock gluten free flour or pasta but there will be rice and grain options available for our gluten free customers. As well as a range of seeds and nuts.

What precautions do you have in place for customers with a nut allergy?

All the products will be stored separately and all equipment will be wiped down after refilling the units to reduce potential cross contamination as much as possible. We also have signs clearly stating that it is a mixed allergen area.

Please read the printed label on the containers for these details. In addition the labels that are printed for your purchase will also contain ingredients with allergen details highlighted.
