Top 5 foods to keep our eyes healthy
Our eyes are an important part of our body and healthy eyes means we can lead a healthier life, so we must be careful to look after them.
As the body’s most developed sensory organs, 80% of what we perceive is through our sight, but we tend to take this for granted. It is only when problems with our vision start to develop, most of us will do everything in our power to restore our eyesight.
We’ve teamed up with Eyecan Jersey, to look at the five different food types which keep our eyes healthy.
Oily fish like salmon, sardines, tuna and mackerel are rich in omega 3 fatty acids, which keep our brain, skin and retina healthy. Eating these types of oily fish helps protect against dry eye and many other eye diseases.
2. Colourful fruits and vegetables
Bright and colourful fruit and veg such as carrots, tomatoes, sweet potatoes, peppers, strawberries and pumpkins get their colours from antioxidants, which help reduce the risk of many eye diseases. They are also excellent sources of vitamin A and C, which also help to protect your eyesight.
Eggs are a great food to eat for eye health. The yolks are rich in vitamin A, lutein and zeaxanthin, which are all vital for keeping your eyes healthy and have been proven to reduce the risk of eye diseases.
4. Leafy greens
Leafy greens such as lettuce, kale, broccoli spinach and cabbage, contain carotenoids called lutein and zeaxanthin. These carotenoids promote a healthy retina and help to protect against eye conditions.
5. Nuts and seeds
Nuts and seeds contain Omega 3 fatty acids and are also full of vitamin E. Supporting the health of the retina against dry eye syndrome, cataracts and other diseases.
